Fit for a King

The Elvis

I don’t know how many people this happens to, but recently while sitting at work trying to get through the day, I was struck by a random craving for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I know what you’re thinking: who not currently enrolled in elementary school has these cravings? Well, me, that’s who.

So I made a date with the boyfriend to meet at Peanut Butter & Co. for lunch to get my peanut butter fix. I’d been to PB& Co. before and knew that they had not only all manner of sandwich featuring peanut butter but all manner of peanut butter, some with swirls of dark chocolate, others flecked with raisins and cinnamon, some sweetened by the taste of maple syrup.

Not particularly pretty, but pretty tasty

While I originally wanted just an old school peanut butter and jelly sandwich, when I laid eyes on “The Elvis,” I knew that’s what I had to get. Creamy peanut butter (though crunchy was an option too), sliced bananas, honey, and bacon, yes bacon, on whole wheat. Just as the King himself would have liked it. And because I knew no peanut butter sandwich would be complete without milk, I got a glass of skim to wash it all down.

Now, I’m not saying this is the best sandwich I’ve had recently but it wasn’t bad at all. It was rich and heavy, a mouth-filling, goopy, sticky sweet mess with a savory crunch from the bacon. It was tasyt, interesting and unusual. If this was Elvis’ favorite sandwich, I get why he died fat.  It’s definitely not my new favorite sandwich, but it was fun, and at the very least it fixed my peanut butter craving.
